Adhaar Mahila Udyog

A livelihood program to support needy women

What is Aadhar Mahila Udyog?

Aadhar Mahila Udyog is a livelihood program that supports slum dwellers and needy women. This program has supporting many such women and helping them to earn livelihood to support their families. Slum women who used to beg or other activities have been earning their livelihood through this program. As well as their children also getting an education in the Utkarsha school.

Aadhar Mahila Udyog was started 6 years ago and has since then supported over 1500 families. They manufacture varieties of bags and the revenue earned from selling those bags are utilized to support their families and some part is used to support the underprivileged children.

Mahesh Foundation started Aadhar Mahila Udyog that trains women to make school bags and other income-generating activities. The concept of the livelihood creation unit began by wanting to impart a marketable skill to women of underserved communities through which they could earn a sustainable source of income. We wanted our approach to the livelihood center to be holistic. We understood that the need was not only for training but also for long term on-job experience in order to have a sustained impact on their livelihood. While exploring the market we found that school bags were something that Mahesh Foundation could easily find market linkages for.  Hence, started training them to manufacture bags and earn a livelihood.

Our Challenges

There are many challenges faced by the people dwelling in the economically weaker section of the society, such as discrimination, lack of opportunities, and ignorance throughout their life. Due to this they have not been able to acquire quality education and healthcare. Illiteracy has caused unemployment and thus they are struggling to earn their daily bread.

They couldn’t come to mainstream society because of the ill-treatment by the relatives and society making them emotionally and mentally weak. They are desperately in need of support to live an independent and dignified life.

Our Solution

Mahesh Foundation identified underprivileged slum dweller women and trained them to manufacture varieties of bags and set up a manufacturing unit called Aadhar Mahila Udyog. Also, provided a platform for them to sell their products. For the past 6 years, more than 1500 needy women are benefiting through this initiative helping them to earn livelihood to support their families.

Women who dwell in the slums used to beg or do other activities have been earning their livelihood through this program. As well as their children are also getting an education in the Utkarsha school.

In order to ensure that we are moving in the direction of our two goals of “Full Employment” and “Self Reliance,” constant monitoring and evaluation is taken care pertaining to their health and personality development.
